Unlock iPhone software - Why are people paying money to have their iphones unlocked when you van get it unlocked for free!

It is very easy to unlock a 1.1.2 iPhone using the right tools of course. I picked up this article here by Ryan Block

It looks like the battle’s officially over between iPhoneSIMfree and the numerous unique groups of open source hackers trying to software SIM unlock the iPhone. Earlier this month iUnlock, the first free, open source iPhone SIM unlock app, was released to the underground just 74 days after the iPhone’s release. Developed by the iPhone Dev Team, it’s not (yet) for the faint of heart and it takes a little longer to do its magic than iPhoneSIMfree’s method, but it works.

To pull this off you’ll need iUnlock + nor + the .fls file, which is available in ZIPs all over. We’ve got the app here, but this package doesn’t include all of the files necessary. Good list of links here, or try here, here, here, here, and here.

For the how-to, just hit up one of those guides down below. Naturally, we offer zero guarantees that any of this will work. (Read: don’t whine to us if your iPhone gets bricked.) Big ups to the iphone.unlock crew, Draken, and, of course, the iPhone Dev Team. Let us know in comments if this technique works for you.

Update: We’ve confirmed the hack! Yes, it’s fully restore-resistant, too, which is great news. We’ll get you all the juicy proof in a few, but we have indeed managed to software unlock an iPhone with iUnlock. Also, HaRRo says the app should be out “very soon” to make this easier on the noobs.

Update 2: Depending on activation method, YouTube might not be working after the unlock — ours isn’t. This is, of course, expected behavior. There’s a Windows script here that should hopefully fix you up (again, we don’t make any guarantees), but Mac users will have to look elsewhere. Also, alongside the Mac GUI iUnlock app in the works, the iPhone Dev Team is prepping a Windows version, a simple bash script and an iPhone app — and eventually an all-in-one app that can do everything from the Jailbreak to the unlock.

Update 3: We’ve posted our terminal output from using the hack after the break. Go ahead. Nerd out. Also, the graphical version isn’t out quiet yet, but we’ve got the first image of it above. Check it out.

Update 5: Ok, the graphical unlock app still isn’t yet out, but we’ve tested an early build, and it definitely works! Check it out here.

There are many ways of getting free ringtones for your iphone, you can hack itunes, change file extensions like AAC to M4R and more.

I have collected a few snippets from the web for you

MacRumors:

A MacRumors forum member discovered that you can actually get free ringtones directly inside iTunes by just changing around a file extension. All official purchased ringtones have the .M4R extension, so all you have to do is rename any AAC file to a M4R file to get it to show up in iTunes under Ringtones. Sync to your phone and you’re done. To delete the ringtones, you may have to go into the Ringtones folder under your iTunes music directory. Zero cents beats 99 cents any day.

Free iPhone Ringtones Video: Link

Today, I’m very happy to introduce Apple Gazette’s very first piece of software. A very simple iPhone ringtone Automator built application based on this tutorial for converting AAC files into ringtones for the iPhone.

The application is free to download. You are using it at your own risk. Please read the Read Me file before using the application. iTunes MUST BE closed for it to work. If iTunes is open, it will not add the file to the Ringtones tab on your iPhone.

OK - Let’s give iRing2 a shot. This is still an iPhone Ringtone Automator workflow. It works just fine for me, but I haven’t been able to test it on another machine yet. It takes the AAC file, turns it into an m4r file, lets you move it to your iTunes Ringtone folder, then converts it back to an m4a file after its there.

I’ve successfully uploaded 2 rintones to my iPhone using it. If you don’t have a iPhone Ringtones folder in your iTunes Music folder you will need to create it for iRing to run the script properly.

If you’re still using iTunes 7.4 you can download the original iRing here.

Click Here to download iRing 2.

Thank you Kevin

Unlock Iphone Ringtones for free, I picked up this great article here: How to make Custom iPhone ringtones without paying Apple $2
Apple started selling iPhone ringtones for $2 apiece through its iTunes store last week, but if you aren’t afraid of a little tinkering, you can get that “Hey Ya” or “Sexy Back” ringtone without [...]

Unlock Iphone Ringtones for free, I picked up this great article here: How to make Custom iPhone ringtones without paying Apple $2

Apple started selling iPhone ringtones for $2 apiece through its iTunes store last week, but if you aren’t afraid of a little tinkering, you can get that “Hey Ya” or “Sexy Back” ringtone without shelling out the extra bucks.

Users have to pay Apple $1 for a song, plus an extra $1 to convert that song into a ringtone. Of course, hackers immediately set out to find a way to generate unlocked iPhone ringtones for free. In a classic game of cat and mouse, Apple has spent the last few days trying to block iPhone owners from installing free ringtones on their iphones — only to watch iphone hackers come up with workarounds just hours after each patch is released.

Apple has continued to update its iTunes software (which syncs with the iPhone to add ringtones) to block the specific loopholes uncovered by the iphone hackers. In fact, iTunes was updated almost immediately after the first loophole was uncovered Friday.

Despite Apple’s best efforts, the chase continues. The most-popular desktop applications for installing custom ringtones were updated this weekend, in one case only hours after Apple updated its software to block them.

Mac users can rely on applications like iToner ($15 from Ambrosia Software), which is a full-featured iphone ringtone manager for the iPhone. Windows users can get similar functionality from iPhoneRingtoneMaker ($15 from Efiko Software).

These options feature drag-and-drop iphone ringtone management, including the ability to use just about any sound file and the option to set specific songs to play when specific people call. The latest iTunes update appears to have crippled iPhoneRingtoneMaker for some users, but the developers at Efiko are working on the problem. IToner is currently up to date.

Granted, the methods described below may very well be rendered obsolete the next time Apple updates iTunes or the iPhone’s firmware.

So, to keep the instructions up to date, we’ve also posted them in Wired’s How To Wiki. You can follow along there and help keep the instructions detailed and current as the Whack-A-Mole game continues.

ITunes 7.4

The simplest DIY method involves just using iTunes and some free iphone software. Apple quickly disabled this ultrasimple free ringtone method with the release of iTunes 7.4.1, but if you haven’t yet upgraded to 7.4.1, this method will work.

Shortly after the release of iTunes 7.4 — which came out last Wednesday, the day iphone ringtones were announced — users noticed that the main difference between ringtones and regular audio files were their file extensions. Regular AAC files have the file extension .m4a, while ringtones use the file extension .m4r.

ITunes 7.4 will automatically create a new folder for storing ringtones in your music library the first time you open a .m4r file, provided you have the “Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized” option checked. This folder is where you’ll want to put your ringtone files, but first you’ll need to edit the song down to a suitable size. The size of an allowed ringtone on the iPhone tops out at around 3 megabytes.

For Mac users, there are several ways to whittle down your tracks. You could use Apple’s Quicktime Pro or Garageband if you have them. You can also edit MP3s in the free Audion 3, which features a nice waveform editing tool. Windows users can edit audio files with the free Audacity. Pick the 20 to 30 seconds you want to use as your ringtone, and save the file as an MP3.

Next, add the shortened file to your iTunes library, then right-click on it in iTunes and choose “Convert to AAC.” The clip will need to be an AAC file in order to be used as a ringtone. Finally, change the file extension to .m4r, and move the AAC to the “Ringtones” folder in your music library.

Since both Windows and Mac OS X like to hide file extensions, the renaming part can be tricky. Make sure you aren’t just appending a file extension to the hidden one. On a Mac, choose “Get Info” in the Finder and make sure “Hide extension” is unchecked. In Windows, make sure the “Hide extensions for known file types” option in Windows Explorer is turned off.

When you sync your iPhone, you should see the new iphone ringtones displayed in your iphone’s sound settings.

ITunes 7.4.1

Even if you have already upgraded to iTunes 7.4.1, all hope is not lost.

First, complete all the steps listed above for version 7.4. Then use this simple trick: Head back into the iTunes music folder and change the extension of your .m4r ringtones back to .m4a. Convoluted, yes, but it does work. For now.

More Alternatives

Or, rather than mess around with your file extensions, you can also use applications that automate the process. Rogue Amoeba’s MakeiPhoneRingtone and AppleGazette’s iRing are both free downloads for the Mac. Create the ringtone clip, and these apps will handle the rest.

There is another method of getting custom ringtones on your iPhone as well, though it requires using the Jailbreak application and a bit of command-line sauce.

Using Jailbreak to unlock your iPhone and installing the SSH application will let you interact with the iPhone’s file system just as you would any other external device. You’ll be able to install free iphone ringtones and much, much more.

The legality of all this futzing is still being debated. Some say using a song you purchased (either on a CD or online) as a ringtone does not constitute fair use and may be grounds for copyright infringement. So, proceed with caution.

And before you go crazy making a dozen ringtones, we can’t help but suggest you consider another ring option: the ever-popular vibrate setting. Like a timeless black suit or little black dress, vibrate is classy, demure and doesn’t annoy the hell out of everyone within 20 feet of you.

Unlock the French iPhone

Unlock iPhone in France

John Cox, Network World

Apple is releasing an unlockd version of the iPhone that will allow iphone users to run it on various cellular networks. But you have to live in France to unlock the iPhone.According to a report in the International Herald Tribune, Orange will offer both a locked iphone and an unlocked iphone for a higher, but undisclosed price. Both are expected to be unveiled in November.

Under a just-announced deal, the European mobile carrier Orange will be the exclusive source for the iPhone in the French market. The unlocked iphone is concession to a French law that forbids companies to bundle a cell phone to a specific mobile operator.

Apple recently signed exclusive deals, similar to the one with US-based AT&T, with O2 in the UK, the wireless division of Spain’s Telefonica, and with Germany’s T-Mobile, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom.

From the outset, Apple’s decision has come under concerted attack by iphone hackers trying to unlock the iphone’s SIM card, thereby allowing the phone to run on a network other than AT&T. Apple has made a just-as-concerted counter-attack to undo those iphone hacks.

According to the Tribune report, Orange wouldn’t say whether it had agreed to give Apple a share of the service revenues generated by iPhone users. This is one of the most striking features of Apple’s move into the mobile phone market. The Tribune quoted a Nortel executive on how revolutionary this change is: “For operators, having a handset maker suddenly demand a slice of their revenues is like being asked to change your religion,” said Gerry Collins, the director of strategic marketing at Nortel Networks. “This is really a significant change for the industry.”
